2019-20 UEFA Champions League: Group Stage – Liverpool vs KRC Genk

After coming from behind in each of their last three domestic games, Liverpool switch focus as they welcome KRC Genk to Anfield in a huge Champions League clash.

Victory for Jurgen Klopp’s men would all but mathematically guarantee their place in the knockouts if Napoli avoid defeat to Salzburg, whilst Genk must win here to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Liverpool have no fresh injury concerns as Joel Matip and Xherdan Shaqiri remain sidelined until after the international break, with respective knee and calf injuries.

Nathaniel Clyne is also absent with a long-term knee injury.

Genk remain without first choice goalkeeper, Danny Vukovic due to an Achilles injury with Gaetan Coucke set to start instead.

Mbwana Samatta meanwhile could return up front after being rested at the weekend.

Stat Attack

  • Liverpool won their only previous meeting with Genk, which came a fortnight ago as they ran out 4-1 winners.
  • Genk lost their only previous trip to England in a 5-0 thrashing by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
  • Liverpool have lost just one of their last 24 European home games (W17, D6, L1).

Prediction

Liverpool’s biggest issue at present is their defending because they are constantly conceding careless goals like Trezeguet’s for Aston Villa on Saturday, which is unacceptable for the reigning Champions of Europe in any competition.

I therefore can see Genk looking to get an early foothold on the game otherwise this will be a simple victory for Liverpool, irrespective of whether they concede or not.

Prediction: Liverpool 3-1 KRC Genk

Result: Liverpool 2-1 KRC Genk
