2019-20 Premier League: Week Eight – Liverpool vs Leicester

Premier League leaders, Liverpool face a tough test as they welcome third-placed Leicester City to Anfield in Brendan Rogers’ first trip to Merseyside since he sacked four years ago.

A win for Liverpool will extend their lead over Manchester City to eight points, whilst Leicester can move to second with victory and cut the gap to the Reds down to just four points.

Joel Matip could be available for Liverpool after a knock suffered at Sheffield United kept him out of their dramatic midweek win over Red Bull Salzburg.

Alisson could also feature after recovering from a calf injury but Nathaniel Clyne (knee) and Xherdan Shaqiri (calf) are both ruled out.

Leicester will have James Maddison available after the midfielder sat out Sunday’s five goal thrashing of Newcastle with an ankle injury.

Matty James however remains sidelined for the Foxes with a calf injury.

Form

Liverpool remain unbeaten in the league after squeezing past Sheffield United last weekend, registering only their third clean sheet in all competitions this season.

Leicester have lost just one of their nine games in all competitions so far this season, drawing blank in just one of their five away outings in league and cup competitions.

Prediction

This fixture comes four years and one day after Brendan Rogers was sacked by Liverpool, which will give his Leicester team additional motivation here to get a result.

Liverpool meanwhile are currently on top form but their lack of clean sheets is a concern coming into a top fixture like this, particularly after Leicester dismantled Newcastle on Sunday in ruthless fashion so we should see goals here.

A repeat of last season’s draw here would therefore be a solid result for both teams but if Leicester are to mount a title challenge, they need to beat top teams which I have a feeling will happen given that Liverpool are probably going to be slightly tired from Wednesday’s antics.

Prediction: Liverpool 1-2 Leicester City

Result: Liverpool 2-1 Leicester City
