2019-20 Sky Bet Championship: Week Three Roundup

This weekend saw a change of leader at the top of the Sky Bet Championship, with Sheffield Wednesday displaced from top spot.

Matt Smith’s 37th minute header was enough for Millwall to secure victory over the Owls and move above them into fifth place, whilst Charlton stayed second after twice coming from behind to rescue a point in a 2-2 draw at Barnsley.

That meant that Patrick Bamford’s brace against 10 men Wigan was enough to send Leeds top, ahead of the Addicks on goal difference.

West Brom sit third after Grady Diangana’s second half double secured victory over Luton, who initially led from Harry Cornick’s 15th minute header.

Swansea meanwhile saw off Preston North End in a five goal thriller to climb up to fourth as Joe Rafferty initially handed the Lilywhites an early lead, before goals from Borja Baston and George Byers seemingly turned the match around come the 63rd minute.

Parity was soon restored minutes later when Sean Maguire was fouled and up stepped Daniel Johnson to slot in a 67th minute penalty, although Swansea found their eventual winner just two minutes later when Baston headed in a cross from Jake Bidwell.

Down at the bottom, Jan Siewert was dismissed by Huddersfield on Friday night after seeing Huddersfield fall to a 2-1 home defeat by fellow relegated rivals – Fulham as Karlan Grant cancelled out Aleksandar Mitrovic’s opener before Ivan Cavaleiro struck late to give the Cottagers victory.

That defeat leaves the Terriers sat second bottom, behind Middlesbrough who fell to a Danny Graham penalty as Blackburn moved out of the bottom three with their first league win of the season.

Stoke however are propping up the table with their first point of the season despite holding Derby to a 2-2 draw, having initially led 2-1 before Martyn Waghorn’s 70th minute penalty rescued a point for the Rams.

Elsewhere, Bristol City saw off QPR through goals from Adam Nagy and Benfik Afobe as the Robins took revenge after the Superhoops had knocked them out of the Carabao Cup on penalties in midweek.

Nottingham Forest and Reading both took respective 3-0 home wins over Birmingham City and Cardiff as all four remain in mid-table.

Finally, Brentford snatched a late point as Ollie Watkins cancelled out Jarrod Bowen’s opener for Hull.
