2018-19 FA Cup: Fourth Round Replays – Newport vs Middlesbrough

This midweek sees the FA Cup take centre stage as five fourth round ties remain still to be settled, with Tuesday’s big match seeing Newport host Middlesbrough at Rodney Parade.

Having snatched a super late 1-1 draw at the Riverside Stadium just over a week ago, Newport will be smelling blood as they aim to make it four home FA Cup games unbeaten against higher opposition.

Middlesbrough meanwhile know that victory will bag them a home tie against Manchester City in the fifth round.

Newport County could start Joe Day in goal, after he missed the draw due to his wife being due to give birth.

Several first team regulars who were rested at weekend against Grimsby are all set to start with Padraig Amond amongst those set for a recall.

Middlesbrough have a full squad available with only midfielder, Lewis Wing set to be sidelined as he struggles with a groin injury.

Stat Attack

  • Newport have lost two of their last three meetings with Middlesbrough, including their only clash at Rodney Parade (D1, L2).
  • This match brings Boro’s nine home match run in FA Cup to an end with their last away trip ending in a 2-0 defeat at Arsenal.
  • Newport have netted nine goals en route to this game compared to seven at same stage last season, losing 2-0 at Tottenham Hotspur at this stage last season after a 1-1 draw in first leg.

Prediction

Middlesbrough need to be wary here of Newport who have lost just two home games all season in all competitions.

Saturday’s comeback win from 2-1 down at West Brom however will give them the confidence they need to go and kill this game off within normal time.

Prediction: Newport County 0-2 Middlesbrough

Result: Newport County 2-0 Middlesbrough
