2017-18 UEFA Champions League Semi Finals – Second Legs: AS Roma vs Liverpool (Liverpool lead 5-2 on aggregate)

With Real Madrid through to the 2017018 UEFA Champions League Final, they await the winner of AS Roma or Liverpool.

A thrilling first leg saw Liverpool emerge victorious in a seven goal thriller but AS Roma have a two away goal advantage.

Can they make that count and repeat what they did three weeks ago here against Barcelona?

Team news

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is ruled out for rest of season with a knee injury.
AS Roma are without Diego Perotti (ankle) and Kevin Strootman (knock) for this match.

Liverpool come here without defender, Joe Gomez after the youngster picked up a knock during Saturday’s draw against Stoke City.

Sadio Mane however returns to the squad after skipping Saturday’s match.

Midfielder, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is ruled out for rest of season with a knee injury.

Adam Lallana (thigh), Emre Can (back) and Joel Matip (thigh) are also absent but Alberto Moreno could return at left-back.

Form

AS Roma beat Chievo 4-1 at weekend with Edin Dzeko getting a brace to make it two wins in last three home games.

Liverpool meanwhile drew 0-0 at home to Stoke.

Stat Attack

  • In three previous trips to Roma, Liverpool have taken two draws and a win, although their very first meeting at the Stadio Olimpico ended with a 4-2 win on penalties.
  • No team have managed to overturn a 5-2 deflict from playing the first leg away.
  • Liverpool have progressed from seven of previous nine semi-finals in this competition, only being denied on two occasions by Inter Milan (1964-65) and Chelsea (2007-08).
  • Roma are yet to concede at home this season in the Champions League.
  • Edin Dzeko has scored in Roma’s last four Champions League games.

Prediction

Roma will be up for this knowing that they have twice overcome first leg defeats in the knockout stage this season, and knocked out Barcelona with a 3-0 home win in last round.

That is the margin that they need this time round to again progress via away goals and I think that Liverpool will leak some.

In the end, I can see both teams scoring with Liverpool having enough to win this.

Prediction: AS Roma 2-3 Liverpool (Liverpool win 8-4 on aggregate)

Result: As Roma 4-2 Liverpool (Liverpool win 7-6 on aggregate)
