PL – Tuesday 28th November

Premier League commences the first of three midweek rounds this week. Four fixtures will be played on Tuesday whilst rest are played on Wednesday.

Tuesday’s highlights include Watford vs Manchester United and the ‘M23 derby’ between Brighton and Crystal Palace.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Crystal Palace

Brighton suffered a tough but impressive defeat at Manchester United whilst Crystal Palace continued their strong home run of late, beating Stoke 2-1 at home on Saturday.

In recent years, this fixture has been a Championship tie with Palace winning three to Brighton’s one and two draws.

Brighton have a strong home record with just one defeat, so will fancy their chances here against Roy Hodgson’s Eagles.

Palace are still without an away win or goal and in the end, that stat will probably prove decisive in the result.

Despite that last gasp home win on Saturday, I can’t see Palace starting to reverse their away fortunes here sadly.

Prediction: Brighton 1-0 Crystal Palace

Jake predicts: Brighton 1-2 Crystal Palace

Result: Brighton 0-0 Crystal Palace

Leicester vs Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham will look to use last season’s 6-1 win here for inspiration as they seek to end their rut.

After a strong run till late October, Spurs have won once, lost two and mustered up a home draw with West Brom at weekend.

That run has left them 13 points off the top 13 games, which is disappointing given their quality as a team.

Leicester have seen an improvement in form as Tottenham dipped, winning one and drawing two of their last four games.

Their last home game however ended in predictable defeat to Manchester City, despite a strong performance.

Both teams have roughly half of their home/away goals in each half but Mauricio Pochettino’s men have the opening half edge.

Those graphics suggest that if we get goals, it could be a corker of a match.

What ultimately may swing this game is Harry Kane’s record of ten goals in nine appearances against the Foxes.

This could be a thriller but I fancy Spurs to make it four wins from four trips to the King Power Stadium.

Prediction: Leicester 1-3 Tottenham Hotspur

Jake predicts: Leicester 0-2 Tottenham Hotspur

Result: Leicester 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur

Watford vs Manchester United

Watford have a mixed home record so far against three of the ‘big six’ at Vicarage Road. Manchester United are the latest visitors so will we see more drama here.

The opening weekend saw them draw 3-3 with Liverpool before getting crushed 0-6 by Manchester City, a month later.

October then saw the Hornets bounce back with victory over Arsenal, meaning that this will be an exciting if difficult fixture for Jose Mourinho and his Red Devils.

Man Utd however have dominated this fixture in the Premier League with 12 wins from 13 trips. Their only defeat came last season off the back of an Europa League game.

If Watford are to get anything, they need to improve in all area averages because visitors have dominated except for red cards.

United have struggled lately with the squad being rotated often but if are on song here, will be difficult to beat.

Prediction: Watford 1-2 Manchester United

Jake predicts: Watford 0-0 Manchester United

Result: Watford 2-4 Manchester United

West Bromwich Albion vs Newcastle United

Both teams enter this match in dire straits as Alan Pardew prepares to take over at the Hawthorns.

West Brom ended a run of four defeats with a draw at Tottenham last time out, whilst the Magpies are without victory since beating Crystal Palace, a month ago.

Newcastle rule this fixture, avoiding defeat in eight of last 12 trips but the Baggies won two of the last three meetings here, losing the other.

West Brom fans will hate to hear that their team haven’t won a top flight game on Tuesdays since May 1985.

In the Premier League era, they have drawn ten and lost 24 league matches on a Tuesday night.

Stats wise, both teams have averaged 5.17 corners but Newcastle have had more shots on target.

Home/Away stats West Brom Newcastle
Corners 5.17 5.17
Fouls 12.5 10.67
Shots 9 14.83
Shots on Target 3.17 5.5
Goals 1 0.67

Ultimately when it comes to goals though, the Baggies have averaged one goal per home game to Newcastle’s 0.67 away goals.

In terms of prediction, I am not expecting much here other than a boring draw.

Prediction: WBA 0-0 Newcastle

Jake predicts: WBA 1-0 Newcastle

Result: WBA 2-2 Newcastle
