2017-18 UEFA Champions League Group Stage 4 – Wednesday

Manchester United are safely through whilst Celtic are out of the Champions League after last night.

Wednesday’s action sees Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur aim to join United in the knockout stages with two games to spare.

Liverpool however can put themselves in pole position to progress if beat NK Maribor at home.

Liverpool vs NK Maribor

Liverpool enter this knowing that victory will place them a step closer to the last sixteen stage.

Last time out, they crushed NK Maribor 7-0 in Slovenia and will be confident of another win, having not lost at Anfield this season yet.

Maribor are currently on a losing streak in the Champions League, having lost their last 14 games in the competition.

On Saturday, Liverpool were solid if unremarkable against a defensive Huddersfield side at home. They then won 3-0 with all of the goals coming after half time.

Here, I am predicting a more solid and attacking display that will rip Maribor apart en route to a comfortable win.

Prediction: Liverpool 5-0 NK Maribor

Result: Liverpool 3-0 NK Maribor

Napoli vs Manchester City

Anything other than defeat will send Manchester City through but Napoli are no pushovers.

Both teams are currently top of their domestic leagues so expect to see a thriller like last time out, when City won 2-1.

Since first qualifying for European football this decade, City have a W1 D1 L2 record in Italy.

All of those trips have come in the group stages with first occurring at Turin in the 2010-11 Europa League tournament.

Since then, the last three Italian jobs have been held in the Champions League with two being split by one goal. The exception is City’s 2-0 win at Roma in December 2014.

One positive for the Citizens is that every team who have won their first three matches in the group stage, have all gone on to qualify for next round.

Now getting back to the match in question, It will be a tough battle but I think City have too much depth in them for Napoli’s liking.

Pep Guardiola will also rotate the squad a bit to freshen things up but the opportunity to secure qualification now will be the key driving force here.

Prediction: Napoli 1-2 Manchester City

Result: Napoli 2-4 Manchester City

Tottenham Hotspur vs Real Madrid

Both teams enter this knowing that victory will send them through to the last 16.

Both teams suffered defeats at the weekend but Real Madrid need a reaction here, after losing 2-1 at newly promoted Girona in La Liga.

Mauricio Pochettino has Harry Kane back, having rested him on Saturday due to a hamstring strain.

Wembley however sort of devoids Spurs’ record of having never beaten Spanish opposition at home.

A key positive for Tottenham though is that every English team to have seven points at this stage, have all progressed into the knockout stages.

Either way, this is a match which could establish Spurs as a team to watch if they do reach the next stage.

With Kane fully rested, I am expecting him to score but another draw will put both sides in a strong position to qualify next time out.

Prediction: Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Real Madrid

Result: Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 Real Madrid
