2017 UEFA Super Cup

Champions League holders, Real Madrid face Europa League winners, Manchester United in this year’s UEFA Super Cup.

This is the first competitive fixture between these sides since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. That last meeting came in March 2013 when Real ended Fergie’s hopes of bowing out with one last European trophy.

Now can ex Los Blancos manager,  Jose Mourinho produce a upset with his Red Devils?

Team News

Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to feature for the Spanish club after missing most of pre season, due to the Confederations Cup and a court appearance.

Nemanja Matic is set to make his first United start in this fixture.

Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo and Ashley Young are all ruled out with injury whilst centre backs – Phil Jones and Eric Bailly serve suspensions.

Luck against United?

Luck certainly doesn’t look set to be favouring Manchester United here for many reasons.

Mourinho is yet to win a UEFA Super Cup, having been beaten in his previous two UEFA Super Cup games. Those defeats came with Porto in 2003 and Chelsea ten years later after both won the UEFA Cup/ Europa League respectively.

This decade has seen Spain win six Super Cups whilst the other was won by Bayern Munich in 2013 when faced Chelsea under Mourinho.

Only once has the Europa League winner emerged victorious from this fixture – Atletico Madrid in 2012.

Despite all the gloom and doom, there is however some hope for United because no manager has lost three UEFA Super Cup matches that they have featured in.

This game will be feisty given that most of the Galacticos used to play for their now former Portuguese boss.

If the Red Devils can exploit Ronaldo’s little match fitness, they could easily get something here. It will be a tough ask but if can do that, I think they might just win this.

Prediction: Real Madrid 1-2 Manchester United

Result: Real Madrid 2-1 Manchester United
