Liverpool vs Southampton – EFL Cup 2nd Leg

Southampton head to Liverpool with a slim 1-0 lead from the first leg of their League Cup semi final.

Team news

Liverpool are expected to recall Joel Matip after a eligibility problem caused him to miss their last six games.

Southampton could potentially be missing Virgil van Dijk tonight due to an ankle injury.

Jack Stephens is expected to replace the Dutchman if necessary.

Liverpool will be in a confident mood after rediscovering their attacking prowess, which had deserted them in recent weeks.

The news that Phillippe Coutinho has agreed a new contract is really going to boost morale in the dressing room as they seek to overturn a 1-0 deficit.

Their defence is still questionable after conceding three goals in Saturday’s league defeat to Swansea.

The return of Matip should help restore some order at the back but Southampton are going to be tough to keep out.

Claude Puel will be hoping that the Saints can follow up their destruction of Premier League champions, Leicester by seeing off the Reds.

They will however face a buoyant Liverpool, who will be hoping that Saturday’s return to form wasn’t a blip.

Both sides are in FA Cup action on Saturday as Liverpool host Wolverhampton Wanderers whilst Southampton has Arsenal at St Marys.

Could this come into the mind of both managers if things are nervy in the latter stages?

  • Liverpool have a 3-2 losing record in the League Cup semi finals when enter from behind.
  • Only two teams out of the last eight  who entered the second leg with a slender 1-0 lead, have gone on to reach the final.
  • Southampton are unbeaten in their last three League Cup outings against top flight opposition

Prediction: Liverpool 2-2 (Southampton win 3-2 on aggregate)

Result: Liverpool 0-1 Southampton (Southampton win 2-0 on aggregate)
