Corey Whitely is proud of Bromley’s “DNA” as he netted their winner in a 1-0 victory at Newport County.

Whitely intercepted a tame 88th-minute clearance and rifled a powerful strike into the far-left corner to secure victory for Bromley against his former team, which kept the Ravens top of Sky Bet League Two.

The 34-year old in his post-match reaction described the game as “scrappy” but insisted that type of performance is within the club’s genetics under manager – Andy Woodman.

“Um, bit scrappy. I don’t think we were at our best today. Um, it’s a tough place to come to. It’s a long journey. Tuesday night. We dug in to the end. It’s in our DNA and seen it so many times before where we’ve kind of snatched it at the end. Um come away with three points.

Whitely played for Newport between 2019-21 in which he scored one goal in 18 appearances – amidst loans at Bromley and Boreham Wood, but he felt that his winner was just a fluke chance that found the net as Newport slipped to within one point of the relegation zone.

“Um yeah, I thought just why not? I believe in myself. I believe I’ve got a good kind of finish from outside the box. Um thought it set up all right and thought why not.”

Bromley have a strong track record of late winners this season with six winners scored after the 85th minute, but Whitely felt that it is a demonstration of their grit even not firing on all cylinders.

“Um boys in the changing room um know when they’re at like not the best but no doubt they will give it their all for the whole 90 minutes all the way to the final whistle.”

“Yeah, exactly. We’ve had a long run of being unbeaten. Um, and through that run, we ain’t been the best every game, but we’ve just dug in and never gave up. And that’s the DNA of our club.”

Whitely also spoke of the team spirit as he praised his teammates for pulling together in one direction in their push for promotion, and refusal to get caught up in the promotion talk.

“Everyone’s pushing in the right direction. If you’re starting or if you’re on the bench or even some of the boys are not in the squad. Um we all want the same thing, the same goal and everyone’s giving it their all.”

“Yeah, eight games we are but we just take one game at a time and and that’s it really.”

Whitely added that Newport deserve credit for their fighting spirit despite fighting the drop.

“Yeah, they like I said, it’s a tough to come to. I’ve obviously played here before. I know what it’s kind of about. They’re a good squad, you know what I mean? They got a good manager. Um their position doesn’t reflect what they’re capable of. But yeah, it’s a tough place to come to and I’m happy that we just got the three points over the line.”

Bromley now host Colchester at the Copperjax Stadium on Saturday 21 March but Whitely is wary of the fact that there will be no simple games in the run-in no matter how they appear on paper.

“No game’s going to be easy in the league. Um coming to the end now. So teams are fighting for every point. Um and we just have to get home, rest up and then we go again on Saturday.”
