George Russell won an entertaining 2026 Chinese Sprint Race to extend his title lead.

Russell survived a battle against Lewis Hamilton in the opening five laps in which both drivers swapped the lead until the Mercedes driver made a crucial pass on Lap 5 to eventually take victory, during which he survived a late safety car caused by Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished second ahead of Lewis Hamilton who rounded out the top three, following a penultimate pass on Lando Norris.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Oscar Piastri, Liam Lawson and Oliver Bearman rounded out the top eight.

Russell now extended his title lead to 11 points ahead of Antonelli as the Mercedes pair continue to head the drivers’ standings.

At lights out, Russell made a clean getaway whilst his teammate, Antonelli got bogged down to eighth which allowed Norris and Hamilton to pass him for second and third, but Hamilton soon cleared Norris for second and chased down Russell and passed his ex Mercedes teammate into Turn 8 for the lead.

Russell however repassed him into Turn 14 and the pair subsequently changed lead until the Mercedes driver cleared the seven-time champion on Lap 5 into Turn 14, from which he subsequently sped away to victory.

Leclerc meanwhile cleared Norris at the start of Lap 2 and proceeded to bide his time until he passed Hamilton on Lap 8 for second, as his Ferrari teammate began to struggle for pace after his lively start.

Antonelli meanwhile collided with Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar at Turn 6 on the opening lap but quickly cleared Bearman and Gasly for sixth by the end of the second lap, before he passed Piastri into the final corner on Lap 4 for fifth.

The Italian then cleared Norris on Lap 7 then Hamilton on Lap 11, before he passed Leclerc on the run to Turn 14 on Lap 13, just mere seconds before the safety car was deployed following a stoppage for Hulkenberg at the first corner.

Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren meanwhile opted to pit their drivers which saw Russell retain his lead ahead of; Leclerc, Norris and Hamilton as Lawson and Bearman jumped Antonelli and Piastri by staying out.

Racing resumed on Lap 17 with Russell having built a quick gap to Leclerc and Norris, whilst Piastri cleared Antonelli, Bearman and Lawson for fifth.

Hamilton passed Norris into Turn 1 on the penultimate lap to take third, whilst Antonelli caught and passed Piastri on the same lap for fifth.

Lawson and Bearman clung onto the last two points-paying positions against a late-charging Max Verstappen who had recovered from a slow start which dropped him to 14th position.
