Roundup of a massive round of midweek Sky Bet Championship action as the promotion and relegation battles threw up twists.

Coventry moved eight points clear at the summit with a fifth straight victory as they cruised past Preston to a 3-0 win at the CBS Arena, in which Tatsuhiro Sakamoto put the Sky Blues ahead before Brandon Thomas-Asante’s chested effort and Matt Grimes’ penalty wrapped up the result.

Middlesbrough suffered a shock home loss to Charlton as Conor Coady’s 59th-minute volley secured the Addicks’ first win at the Riverside Stadium since August 2005, which coincidentally was too by a 1-0 result on that occasion.

Third-placed Millwall consequently moved to within one point of Boro after Josh Coburn headed in a 43rd-minute winner at home to Derby.

Ipswich found themselves four points adrift of the second automatic promotion spot in fourth after they were held to a 3-3 draw at Stoke, as Eric Bocat’s own-goal plus goals from Jack Taylor and George Hirst put them in front from 2-0 down after Milan Smit and Bae Jun-Ho put the Potters ahead before Smit equalised with a penalty.

Fifth-placed Hull ended their two-match losing run with a 2-1 victory at sixth-placed Wrexham as Joe Gelhardt and Lewis Koumas struck either side of half time for the Tigers, before Nathan Broadhead netted a consolatory goal for the hosts.

Down in the relegation zone, relegated Sheffield Wednesday held Watford to a 1-1 draw in which Jerry Yates put the Owls in front, only for Vivaldo Semedo to salvage a 90th-minute equaliser for the Hornets.

West Brom slipped to second bottom after Jayson Molumby’s opener was cancelled out by Cyle Larin’s 91st-minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw at The Hawthorns.

Oxford United moved up to third bottom with a 1-0 victory at home to Blackburn as Jamie Donley netted his first Us goal through a 34th-minute winner to boost their survival chances.

Leicester climbed out of the bottom three on goal difference after Ben Nelson’s header and Abdul Fatawu’s volley in the first half secured a 2-0 win at home against Bristol City.

Elsewhere, first-half goals from Ethan Galbraith and Josh Key saw Swansea win 2-1 at Portsmouth, despite Jacob Brown’s consolatory finish for the hosts.

Second-half goals from Jack Stacey and Amankwah Forson saw Norwich complete a 2-1 comeback victory against Sheffield United at Carrow Road, after Jairo Riedewald’s volley put the Blades into a 21st-minute lead.

Patrick Roberts’ sixth-minute finish saw Birmingham end their three-match losing run with a 1-0 home win against QPR.
