2025-26 League Two: Week 25 – Cambridge vs Grimsby

Cambridge United host Grimsby Town in a huge Sky Bet League Two clash at Abbey Stadium.

With the top four not in action due to match postponements caused by frozen pitches, Cambridge can climb to third with victory.

Grimsby can climb to as high as ninth if Barnet and Crewe Alexandra draw in their meeting, whilst Colchester suffer a home defeat against Accrington Stanley.

Team News

Adam Mayor is a doubt for Cambridge after he sat out their 2-0 New Year’s Day victory at home to Walsall due to an unspecified injury suffered in their win at Chesterfield last Monday (29 December).

Kylian Kouassi and Michael Morrison remain sidelined with hamstring injuries.

Grimsby have no fresh injury concerns after their 1-0 victory at Fleetwood, as goalkeeper – Christy Pym remains sidelined with a groin injury.

Where and When is Kick-Off?

Cambridge host Grimsby at Abbey Stadium on Sunday 4 January at 3pm GMT, untelevised live in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Cambridge are unbeaten in their last eight league meetings against Grimsby (W5, D3).
  • Grimsby are winless in their last four league visits to Cambridge (D1, L3).
  • Cambridge have kept clean sheets in their last three home games against Grimsby, in which they ran out 1-0 and 3-0 winners either side of a 0-0 draw in October 2019.
  • 1983-84 season was the last time that both regular-season meetings between Cambridge and Grimsby in a single campaign finished in draws, as the Us drew 2-2 at home then 0-0 away
  • Cambridge have won each of their last two home games by 2-0 results (W2).
  • Grimsby have won just one of their last six away matches (W1, D3, L2).

Prediction

Having clinically dispatched Walsall on New Year’s Day to get right in the automatic promotion mix, Cambridge have put themselves in a good position to further punish the Saddlers – whose game is off – if they continue to be as clinical as they’re currently.

Grimsby though are coming to the Us in a positive mood after they ended their away rut with a late headed winner at Fleetwood in a dominant low-quality game, but this feels like a must-win for their automatic promotion hopes as defeat would leave them 10 points adrift of the top three.

Cambridge however know that this is a huge opportunity for them to move into the top three and put the pressure on Walsall and Salford who would have a match in hand on the Us, so I can see them taking it on current form but Grimsby might just sneak a draw if they are again defensively robust.

Prediction: Cambridge 1-1 Grimsby

Result: Cambridge P-P Grimsby
