Roundup of the final round of the 2025 F2 season as the campaign drew to a close in Abu Dhabi.

With Leonardo Fornaroli having been crowned champion in Qatar. attention turned to the teams’ championship as Invicta sought to achieve the double but Hitech GP and Campos attempted to deny them the title.

Now here is the roundup of all the action across the 2025 F2 season finale at Yas Marina Circuit.

Practice

PREMA’s Sebastian Montoya and Gabriele Mini were first on track but everyone bar Van Amersfoort Racing’s (VAR) John Bennett and Rafael Villagomez and AIX Racing’ Cian Shields soon pitted, whilst the latter trio pitted after their second laps.

Rodin’s Martinius Stenshorne eventually set the initial benchmark time of 2m 02.747 on the medium tyres, but Ritomo Miyata, Montoya, Joshua Durksen, Dino Beganovic, Oliver Goethe and Mini soon exchanged fastest laps repeatedly.

Mini however was the driver who found himself quickest at the halfway mark with 1m 39.866 set in the 24th minute to head Durksen by 0.009s.

The Italian subsequently lowered the benchmark time to 1m 39.630 with four minutes left on the clock, but DAMS’ Jak Crawford left it until the checkered flag to top practice on 1m 39.545 – although his initial fastest lap moments earlier was 0.012 seconds slower but deleted due to a breach of track limits.

Qualifying

Beganovic and Browning were first on track but it was Tsolov who set 1m 56.731 as the first unrepresentative benchmark time, which he soon lowered to 1m 39.089 on his first proper flier.

Crawford however took control on the first set of fliers with 1m 37.633 ahead of Durksen by 0.091s, whilst Lindblad, Miyata, Van Hoepen, Browning and Inthraphuvasak’s lap times were deleted due to breaches of track limits.

Durksen however responded with 1m 37.464 to head Fornaroli and Montoya at the halfway mark of the session.

Lindblad at the start of the final run briefly went fastest before Goethe and Beganovic set 1m 37.096 to go joint top in the 24th minute, but Goethe’s effort was deleted due to a breach of track limits.

Montoya subsequently displaced Beganovic by 0.056s, only for Crawford to go 0.007s quicker but Stanek pulled out 1m 36.836 with four minutes left to claim his second pole of the season.

Crawford qualified second ahead of Fornaroli, Beganovic, Montoya, Goethe, Martins, Durksen, Tsolov and Lindblad who inherited reverse pole for the Sprint.

Tsolov however was handed a three-place grid penalty for the Sprint and Feature Race after he impeded Browning at Turn 9 during the session, which dropped him to fifth for the Sprint and 12th for the Feature Race grids.

Maini’s lap times in his second stint meanwhile were deleted after his rear tyres were incorrectly fitted on the wrong side of his car, which left him 20th on the grid.

Sprint Race

At lights out, Lindblad led from pole as he held off Durksen but Goethe and Tsolov demoted Martins to fifth before he was further demoted by Beganovic at Turn 7, after he was nudged wide on the exit by the Swedish driver.

Montoya meanwhile partially stalled from sixth on the grid which forced Fornaroli to take evasive action but Stanek was further up his left and passed his teammate for tenth on the inside of the opening corner, whilst Dunne and Mini improved to seventh and eighth from 11th and 13th respectively on the grid.

Up front, Lindblad continued to weather immense pressure from Durksen until the Paraguayan ran wide at Turn 12 on lap 9 after a Virtual Safety Car ended, following Bennett’s retirement at turn 5 a lap earlier due to a power unit failure.

Crawford meanwhile found himself ninth amidst the opening-lap chaos and calmly waited until lap 13 before he cleared Mini for eighth, which he followed up with a pass on Dunne on lap 17 for seventh.

On that same latter lap, Beganovic cleared Goethe round the outside of Turn 9 for fourth.

Up front, Durksen reeled Lindblad back in but the Brit clung on to take his third victory of the season, whilst Tsolov settled for a maiden F2 podium in third ahead of his full-time move next season.

Beganovic finished fourth ahead of Goethe whilst Crawford cleared Martins into Turn 9 on lap 20 for sixth, with Dunne having completed the top eight finishers.

Post-race, Fornaroli received a ten-second time penalty after he left the track and gained an advantage as he battled Verschoor in the midfield, which saw the Italian fall from 11th to 17th in the classification.

In the drivers’ standings behind Fornaroli, second-placed Crawford moved three points clear of Verschoor in their battle for the vice-champion honour, whilst Browning and Dunne are still in mathematical contention for second.

Across in the teams’ standings, Invicta’s lead over Hitech was trimmed to 30 points with Campos a further ten points back, although Hitech GP and Campos realistically needed their drivers to both finish on the podium and Invicta to not score in order to snatch the title.

Feature Race

At lights out, Stanek made a clean start to lead Crawford who received a ten-second stop-and-go penalty after DAMS fitted his front tyres to the wrong side of the car on the grid, which necessitated a frantic swap to their correct positions beyond the grid clearance signal.

Durksen meanwhile leapt from eighth to fifth and quickly cleared Fornaroli before the safety car was deployed on lap 2 after Martins and Dunne collided at Turn 6 which sent the pair spinning into Turn 7, with Shields unable to avoid ploughing into Dunne’s stricken Rodin head on.

Luckily the trio all walked away unharmed and the race resumed on lap 6 as Villagomez cleared Browning for ninth on the restart.

Stanek and Beganovic pitted at the end of lap 7 but the pair subsequently battled on their outlaps which saw Beganovic pass the Czech, but allowed Durksen to undercut the pair for the net lead when he pitted at the end of lap 8.

The safety car was again deployed on lap 12 after Montoya suffered the second of two spins a lap earlier – having first spun at Turn 9 on lap 2, although the Virtual Safety Car was initially deployed on lap 10 in futile hope of quickly clearing the PREMA car which had stopped on inside of Turn 10.

Racing recommenced on lap 15 with Fornaroli leading the alternate strategy runners, whilst Durksen plus Beganovic demoted Inthraphuvasak immediately to tenth.

The net leaders then calmly bided their time until Durksen cleared Stenshorne on lap 19 into Turn 6 for seventh on the road, which became sixth two laps later.

Up front, Fornaroli lost the lead to Lindblad on lap 23 but wasn’t able to hold onto second after Crawford passed him into Turn 6 on lap 26.

Lindblad and Fornaroli eventually pitted on lap 31 whilst Durksen cleared Verschoor for second which eventually became the lead a lap later, and the Paraguayan proceeded to bring the season full circle as he clung on for victory in the last race of the campaign – having won the opening sprint race in Australia.

The win also marked his last for AIX Racing as he leaves the team for Invicta next season.

Stanek finished second to wrap up consecutive teams’ titles for Invicta as Mini rounded out the podium after Beganovic got a five-second time penalty for speeding in the pitlane.

Goethe, Villagomez, Maini, Miyata, Lindblad and Crawford completed the top ten.

Fornaroli is already champion but Crawford sealed the vice-champion status with his 10th-placed finish ahead of Verschoor who could only finish 13th

F2 will commence the 2026 season on weekend of 6-8 March in Melbourne, Australia.
