Bromley manager, Andy Woodman rued his team’s inability to “execute” Walsall in their 3-1 defeat in Sky Bet League Two.

Ben Krauhaus fired Bromley into an 18th-minute lead which briefly put them top of the table, but Walsall eventually stayed top with second-half comeback goals from Daniel Kanu, Ryan Finnigan and Courtney Clarke, which meant that Bromley slipped to fifth.

Speaking to Bromley’s YouTube Channel post-match, Woodman felt that his Ravens had wasted chances in the first half which left him disappointed on top of some poor set-piece defending in the second half.

“Well I thought we really should have had two or three before half time. That’s the disappointment for me that we had some really good chances and just didn’t take them. Um because you know they were there for the taking first half.

“Um, second half we knew they were going to throw the kitchen sink at us and they’re going to cause us problems. They’re at home and basically they had a couple of set pieces that we didn’t really deal with particularly well. They’re a big team and you know they punished us for it and that’s something we need to look at a little bit.

“That’s something that has not happened to us too often. Credit to them. You know they’re at home. The crowd got up. We couldn’t cope really with that last little bit and then the third goal is really just us chucking everyone back for 30 seconds and it’s just broke for them.

“I mean it wasn’t a free one but it was. So, yeah I’m disappointed but I just said to the boys in there ‘look you’ve been on a really good run, and um you know if you want to get to the top of the tree you got to come to places like this and you maybe got to dig out a draw or, you know just not get beat. And we kind of had a bit of a learning today out here I think.”

Woodman proceeded to address the importance of executing chances if want a top-three finish and automatic promotion come end of season, as he rued his team’s inability to kill the match off in the first half.

“Yeah I mean it frustrates me when people keep showing we’re a long team ball and all of that malarkey because we do play some good stuff but you know I’m not too overly fussed about that but you know we played some good stuff.

“We got the ball in the right areas. We had some good moments. We just didn’t execute them. Um and that’s sometimes that’s the next level.”

“If you want to be in that top three, you’re going to have to execute teams and put them to bed and we didn’t do that.”

Krauhaus’ goal marked the Brentford loanee’s first goal in League Two which left Woodman pleased at his improved end product, but was critical of his teammates’ inability to take their chances.

“Yeah I’ve been telling Ben to pull the trigger more rather than keep check check and not trying to walk it in, Pull the trigger and that’s what happens. And yeah, it was a good finish. There was other moments though there, that we really should have scored, but we didn’t. And we paid a penalty.”

Bromley are not in action until Tuesday 9 December at home to Crawley at Copperjax Stadium, with Woodman keen to see a response after the defeat ended their four-match winning league run.

The 54 year-old manager however urged his squad and fans to take a moment to reflect on their progress and the fact that they briefly sat top of the table.

“Absolutely yeah look absolutely. I think we should all just hold our breath for a second and just realise that Bromley Football Club are fifth in the league and today they were trying to go top and they were top for a little period.

That doesn’t make me feel great better, but you know we have to also realise that what we’re achieving at this football club so far this season is nothing to be sniffed at and we must keep positive around the place and which we will and realise that we’re not going to win every game and if we’re disappointed about coming to the league leaders and losing, you know then we have come a long way as a football club.”
