Sheffield United have re-hired Chris Wilder less than three months after he was sacked.
Ruben Selles was sacked as manager yesterday (14 September) after a disastrous start to the season saw him lose his six games in charge across all competitions, with the Blades left bottom of the Championship on zero points and just one goal scored plus 11 goals conceded.
The club issued a statement explaining that Selles’ exit came after “a disappointing start” to the season.
“Sheffield United Football Club’s board of directors have opted to make a change at managerial level.
“After a disappointing start to the EFL Championship campaign, Rubén Sellés has been relieved of his duties as manager.
“Following a review of recent performances, and taking into account the feelings of supporters, the timing of the change has been made to give the club the best possible opportunity to improve the current league position.
“The board of directors wish to thank Mr Sellés for his hard work.”
Wilder consequently was re-appointed as manager after less than three months out of a job following his unexpected sacking in June, having narrowly missed out on promotion via the play-offs last season.
Sheffield Utd’s Board of Directors explained that Wilder’s return was about a need “… to stabilise performances and strengthen our push for promotion. While the adoption of a different style of play was pursued with ambition, results have clearly not met expectations.”
The club proceeded to explain that Wilder’s appointment will provide needed stability and understanding of the team.
“Chris Wilder returns with proven leadership and an unparalleled understanding of Sheffield United. We are confident he is the right person to restore momentum, unite the squad and supporters, and deliver the results necessary to achieve our objectives this season.
“We would like to thank Rubén Sellés for his hard work and professionalism during his time at the club. Responsibility for recent results lies with us as owners, and we remain fully committed to supporting the team and pursuing promotion.”
