McLaren’s Lando Norris topped Friday Practice for 2025 Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
Ferrari enjoyed an one-two in FP1 with Lewis Hamilton fastest from Charles Leclerc but FP2 saw McLaren bounce back as Norris set the quickest overall time of the day ahead of Leclerc by just 0.083 seconds.
FP1
Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto were first on track but it was McLaren’s FP1 driver, Alex Dunne who set a benchmark time of 1m 24.686 on the medium tyres.
Several drivers subsequently went quicker as Williams’ Alex Albon and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen soon traded fastest laps, but it was the latter fastest at halfway mark with 1m 20.751 set in the 16th minute ahead of Carlos Sainz by 0.132s.
Verstappen subsequently lowered his benchmark time to 1m 20.692 on his first soft tyre flier before the red flags came out in the 36th minute, after Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar ran wide at Ascari and dispersed gravel across the track.
Ferrari’s Leclerc left it until 12 minutes left before he clocked 1m 20.286 but his teammate, Hamilton found a further 0.169s to top FP1 with 1m 20.117 with four minutes left, whilst Albon and Isack Hadjar set their quickest lap times on hard tyres.
Mercedes’ George Russell however stopped at the Variante della Roggia with a hydraulic failure in the final minute.
Out of the two FP1 runners, Dunne finished quickest in 16th position whilst Alpine’s Paul Aron finished slowest in 20th position.

FP2
Having sat out FP1. Oscar Piastri was straight out on track and set 1m 21.896 as the benchmark time, but Norris headed the first fliers with 1m 21.391 on the medium tyres.
Russell displaced his British compatriot with 1m 21.222 but Piastri went 0.010s quicker just seconds later, before Norris responded with 1m 21.012 to go top in the tenth minute.
Moments after Norris set the fastest lap, the red flags were out after Antonelli spun out at the second Lesmo Curve after he lost the rear on entry.
The session resumed six minutes later and Leclerc on the hard tyre lowered the benchmark time to 1m 20.957, but Verstappen found 0.247s to go quickest on 1m 20.710 at the end of the opening stints.
Once everyone began to switch to their qualifying simulations on soft tyres, Norris lowered the benchmark to 1m 19.878 on the half-hour mark with very few drivers able to get close to the Brit until Sainz fell 0.096s shy in the 35th minute.
Norris eventually finished fastest with his time unbeaten as Leclerc climbed to second and just 0.083s shy but 0.013s clear of Sainz who rounded out the top three, as everyone except Antonelli – on hard tyres – managed a soft-tyre lap time.
