England face Netherlands in a crunch Group D showdown at UEFA Women’s Euro 2025.
Victory or a draw will keep England’s title defence alive until at least the final group match, whilst a defeat would end their hopes of knockout qualification with a game to spare.
Netherlands can stay top with victory and secure a knockout spot but a draw coupled with a France win over Wales would see them slip to second, although they would have qualification in their own hands heading into their final group game against the French.
Team News
England have no fresh injury concerns to report after their opening defeat to France, with manager – Sarina Wiegman now set to make some selection tweaks with Ella Toone and Niamh Charles anticipated to come into the starting line-up.
Netherlands also have no fresh injury concerns to report after a 3-0 victory over Wales in their first Group D match.
When is Kick-Off?
England face Netherlands at Stadion Letzigrund, Zurich, Switzerland, on Wednesday 9 July at 6pm CEST (5pm UK Time), live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK.
Stat Attack
- England have won one of their two previous UEFA Women’s Euro meetings against Netherlands (W1, L1).
- Netherlands lost their only previous UEFA Women’s Euro clash against England on neutral territory (L1), which came in a 2-1 extra-time defeat in Finland in 2009 at the semi-final stage.
- England have lost two of their last three matches in all competitions by 2-1 results (W1, L2).
- Vivianne Miedema has scored three goals in the Netherlands’ last two matches in all competitions (W2).
Prediction
Having started their defeat to France on the front foot, England will be disappointed in how they allowed the French to basically relentlessly bully their defence with aggressive movement and finishing touches – especially after VAR disallowed their opener which marked the turning point.
Sarina Wiegman though will need to tinker with her starting line-up because Charles and Toone need to realistically start in place of Jess Carter and Lauren James, otherwise this could be another difficult game if they don’t tighten up defensively and take their chances up front.
Netherlands on the other hand clinically dispatched Wales but were pretty wasteful at times throughout that match despite their class winning through, so more composure will be needed if they’re to end the Lionesses’ title defence.
I however do expect a serious reaction from England and if they start as well as they did against France but more clinical, I can see them edging the Dutch.
Prediction: England 2-1 Netherlands
Result: England 4-0 Netherlands
