Mercedes’ George Russell dominated the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix as McLaren’s title rivals, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris collided.

Russell dominated a two-stop race to claim his first victory of the season and became the fifth different winner across sprint and Grands Prix formats this season.

Max Verstappen finished second from Andrea Kimi Antonelli who claimed his first podium finish in F1.

Piastri survived a clash with his McLaren teammate, Norris at the end of lap 66 which ended the Brit’s race, whilst he finished fourth from Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and Nico Hulkenberg.

Esteban Ocon finished ninth in Haas’ 200th F1 Grand Prix ahead of Williams’ Carlos Sainz.

In the drivers’ standings, Piastri extended his title lead over Norris to 22 points.

At lights out, Russell and Verstappen held position in a clean start but Piastri found himself passed by Antonelli into turn three.

Further back, Albon ran wide through turns eight and nine which dropped him from ninth to 12th as Hulkenberg passed both him and Alpine’s Franco Colapinto, as Hadjar too snuck through into 11th behind Colapinto but ahead of Albon.

The entire field soon settled into tyre management as Russell fought off Verstappen for the lead which led the Dutchman to trigger the first pit-stop window on lap 13, as he pitted followed by Russell, Antonelli and Piastri on the following laps.

The quartet however rejoined in the same initial order in terms of net position as Norris assumed the lead on the hard tyre from Leclerc, but the latter was the first alternate strategy front-runner to pit on lap 29 followed by Norris a lap later.

Russell up front proceeded to open a five-second gap to Verstappen who found himself caught by Antonelli at the end of lap 37, which forced him to make his second stop rather than be passed.

Mercedes however refused to be baited as they kept Russell and instead pitted Antonelli on the next lap and the Italian narrowly lost out to Verstappen as he exited the pits.

Russell and Piastri eventually made their second stops on laps 43 and 46 which put Norris back into the lead from Leclerc, although the latter pair were this time on different tyres as Norris had put the medium tyres on whilst Leclerc opted for another hard-tyre run.

Norris however on this occasion pitted first on lap 49 to switch back to the hard tyre, whilst Leclerc waited until lap 54 before he put the medium tyres on for his final stint.

Once Leclerc had pitted, Russell survived heavy traffic to claim his first victory since the 2024 Las Vegas GP ahead of Verstappen.

Antonelli clung on to third after Piastri got caught up in traffic trying to hunt him down, which left the Aussie battling Norris and the title rivals collided on the main straight at the end of lap 66, as Norris tried to pass Piastri but the gap closed to send him into the pit wall after he clipped Piastri’s rear.

McLaren consequently missed out on the podium for the first time this season in a frustrating finish, with Norris taking full responsibility for the clash as he explained that he had made a “stupid” move on team radio.

The race subsequently finished under the safety car as Russell took victory in a processional climax.
