Roundup of all the action across a dramatic fourth round in 2024-25 FA Cup which saw plenty of surprise results.

From huge scares to controversial winners and a cupset on Devon’s South Coast, the fourth round had plenty of drama without the hassle of Video Assistant Referee, as teams battled for a spot in the fifth round and a step closer towards Wembley.

Ryan Hardie’s 53rd minute penalty proved enough for Plymouth to eliminate Premier League leaders, Liverpool, after Harvey Elliott had handballed Darko Gyabi’s flicked cross into the box.

Neco Williams’ winning penalty saw Nottingham Forest scrape a 4-2 win at ten-men Exeter on penalties following a thrilling 2-2 draw, in which Josh Magennis put the Grecians in front before Ramon Sosa and Taiwo Awoniyi turned the first half around for Forest only for Willy Boly’s own-goal to pull Exeter back level prior to Ed Turns’ red card.

Joe Willock’s brace plus Callum Wilson’s effort saw Newcastle survive a huge scare to prevail 3-2 at League One leaders, Birmingham City, having fell behind to Ethan Laird’s first-minute opening goal before Tomoki Iwata’s strike dragged the Blues back to 2-2 in a dramatic first half.

Second-half goals from Abdukodir Khusanov and Kevin De Bruyne saw Manchester City survive a scare to win 2-1 at Leyton Orient, having fell behind through Stefan Ortega’s freak own-goal in the first half.

Rodrigo Muniz’s brace saw Fulham win 2-1 away at League One’s Wigan after Jonathan Smith’s briefly equalised for the Latics early in the second half.

Jack Clarke’s brace and Jaden Philogene’s effort saw Ipswich comfortably avoid a cupset at last season’s semi-finalists, Coventry, after George Hirst’s second-minute penalty was cancelled out by Joel Latibeaudiere.

Quick-fire goals from Joao Gomes and Matheus Cunha saw Wolves claim their first FA Cup victory away at Blackburn with a 2-0 win.

Daniel Munoz and Justin Devenny found the net to guide Crystal Palace to a 2-0 win at League Two’s Doncaster Rovers.

Marcus Edwards’ 77th minute winner on debut saw Burnley scrape past Southampton with a 1-0 win at St Mary’s Stadium.

Jacob Ramsey and Morgan Rogers fired Aston Villa to a first FA Cup home win over Tottenham in an eventual 2-1 victory, despite Mathys Tel netting his first goal for Spurs in injury-time.

Kaoru Mitoma’s 57th minute lob saw Brighton complete a 2-1 comeback win at home to Chelsea after Georginio Rutter’s header pulled them level, following Bart Verbruggen’s sloppy own-goal in the fifth minute.

First-half goals from Antoine Semenyo and Daniel Jebbison saw Bournemouth condemn Everton’s final-ever FA Cup match at Goodison Park to a 2-0 defeat, with the Toffees moving to Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium next season.

Harry Maguire nodded in a controversial injury-time winner as Manchester United came from behind to beat his former team – Leicester, who had led at half-time through Bobby De-Cordova Reid before Joshua Zirkzee pulled the Red Devils level.

 

EFL vs EFL 

Femi Azeez’s brace saw Millwall eliminate Championship leaders, Leeds in a 2-0 victory at Elland Road to secure their fifth-round spot.

Rubin Colwill’s brace plus Yousef Salech’s effort saw Cardiff eventually draw 3-3 at Stoke after they initially led 2-0 until Lewis Koumas’ brace and Lewis Baker’s penalty had put Stoke in front, although the Bluebirds ultimately advanced with a 4-2 win on penalties.

Freddie Woodman’s penalty saves against Dan Udoh and ex Preston player – Adam Reach saw Preston prevail 4-2 on penalties against Wycombe, following a goalless draw at Deepdale.
