Danny Welbeck praised his Brighton teammates for delivering a “ruthless” 3-0 victory at Everton.

Brighton began the new Premier League season with a dominant 3-0 victory at Everton, which marked their first competitive win under Head Coach, Fabian Hürzeler.

Kaoru Mitoma put the Seagulls ahead on his first league appearance since February due to a serious back injury, before Welbeck and Simon Adingra wrapped up the win and clean sheet in the second half.

“He is a special talent and we all know the ability he’s got,” commented Welbeck on Mitoma’s importance to the team.

“In one v ones there’s not many better in the Premier League and it’s great to have him back and adding to the firepower we’ve got.”

The 33 year-old also praised his teammates, fans and Hürzeler for their efforts to start the season with “a great performance,” on their final league visit to Everton’s Goodison Park before the Toffees move into their new stadium next season.

Welbeck though felt that patience and a sharp end product were key to the result, as he continued: “We had to go through a rocky period but once we got the first goal we were ruthless and that put us into a great position.”

Hürzeler is the league’s youngest-ever manager at 31 years-old and two years younger than Welbeck, but the England international felt that the team’s open-minded adaptability allowed them to transition well from Roberto De Zerbi’s style.

“We’ve had to adapt to the new manager’s ideas but we’ve had an open mind and taken it forward,” added Welbeck. “It’s not massively different to what we were used to and there’s a lot to be positive about going forward into the rest of the season.”
