Winger, Ian Poveda has joined Sunderland on a free transfer following his release from Leeds United.

Poveda left Leeds last month following a four-and-a-half spell in which he made 36 senior appearances, having moved from Manchester City in January 2020.

The now 24 year-old spent time on loan at Blackburn Rovers, Blackpool and Sheffield Wednesday, during which he managed 46 appearances in total and netted four goals across his time at the two former clubs.

Having considered his options in the wake of his departure, Poveda has signed a three-year contract at Sunderland until June 2027 with option for a further year.

Speaking about his decision to join the Black Cats, Poveda is eager to start playing for the club and teased what fans can expect from him.

“All I want to do is get on the pitch and play for Sunderland. I feel like I have the right people at the Club supporting me and the love I’ve already received from the people here is something I can’t describe.

“I’m a creative player with good one-on-one ability, who is never afraid to take anyone on. I’ll work hard for the team and I’m excited to get started.”

Sunderland Sporting Director, Kristjaan Speakman added: “We have tracked his experiences in the Championship throughout recent seasons and are delighted.

“He’s strong in one-on-one situations and has the acceleration to change the tempo of our play, whilst offering the flexibility to play in several attacking positions.

“We feel these are qualities that can improve our team and equally, he requires the foundations to develop the next stage of his career.”

Poveda represented England at youth international levels but opted to represent Colombia at international level, with his two senior international caps having came in December 2023 in friendly wins over Venezuela and Mexico.
