Oscar Piastri took his maiden Grand Prix victory as he headed Lando Norris in a McLaren one-two finish at 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix.
Piastri took the lead at the opening corner and dominated the opening two phases of the race, until he got undercut by Norris as he pitted on Lap 48 on his two-stop strategy.
Norris however handed Piastri his maiden Grand Prix win with a free overtake on Lap 68, as McLaren achieved their first one-two finish since 2021 Italian GP.
Lewis Hamilton achieved his 200th podium finish in third place ahead of Charles Leclerc and a frustrated Max Verstappen, as the Dutchman settled for fifth after a disruptive race.
Carlos Sainz finished sixth ahead of Sergio Perez and George Russell, who had both recovered from 16th and 17th on the grid, whilst Yuki Tsunoda and Lance Stroll rounded out the top ten.
In the drivers’ standings, Verstappen’s title lead was reduced to 76 points over Norris.
At lights out, Norris got a quick getaway and cut off Piastri but the Aussie was 0.008 seconds faster off the line which gave him the inside line into Turn 1 and the lead.
Verstappen meanwhile didn’t even attempt to make the opening corner as he blasted wide off-track to pass Norris for second, and needed persuasion over team radio to give the position back into Turn 2 on Lap 4.
Sainz meanwhile slipped to seventh at the start from fourth on the grid as Hamilton took fourth from Leclerc and Alonso – who had started on the soft tyre, but the two Spaniards swapped positions into Turn 1 on Lap 3.
Alex Albon meanwhile got a solid launch up to ninth on the soft tyres and was the first driver to pit at the end of Lap 6, which prompted Aston Martin to pit Alonso a lap later to cover off the Williams driver’s undercut attempt.
Up front, Hamilton was the first frontrunner to pit on Lap 17 which led Norris and Piastri to follow suit on the next two laps, whilst Verstappen was hung out by Red Bull until Lap 22.
Leclerc waited until Lap 24 to make his stop which handed Piastri the lead once more from Norris, whilst Hamilton had undercut Verstappen into third.
Verstappen soon grew frustrated and attempted to make the overtake round the outside of Turn 2, only to run wide and found himself stuck behind the seven-time champion until Hamilton pitted on Lap 41 as did Leclerc.
Norris waited until Lap 46 before McLaren called him in for his second stop which saw him undercut Piastri, once the Aussie had pitted two laps later only for him to run wide at Turn 12 as he hunted Norris down on his outlap.
Verstappen grew further frustrated at his out-of-sync strategy to his immediate rivals, as he was made to wait until Lap 50 to make his stop, with the three-time champion left stuck behind Leclerc in fifth position.
Verstappen eventually got past the Monegasque driver on Lap 57 with a lunge on the inside of Turn 1.
Up front, Norris maintained his gap to Piastri despite McLaren wanting him to gift Piastri a maiden Grand Prix win, amidst a circa five-second gap between the teammates.
Verstappen meanwhile caught up to Hamilton and on Lap 64, he tried to pull the same stunt as he did to Leclerc, only to get launched airborne as he clipped Hamilton’s front-right tyre which dropped him back to fifth.
Norris eventually handed Piastri his maiden victory with a free overtake into Turn 1 on Lap 68, but kept his teammate under pressure to the checkered flag for McLaren’s first one-two finish since the 2021 Italian GP won by Daniel Ricciardo from Norris.
Hamilton rounded out the podium ahead of Leclerc, Verstappen, Sainz, Perez, Russell, Tsunoda and Stroll.
F1 will next head to Spa Francorchamps, Belgium, across weekend of 26-28 July ahead of the summer break.
