Atletico Madrid face a tricky second leg test against Inter Milan at Metropolitano Stadium in the Round of 16 in 2023-24 UEFA Champions League.
Trailing 1-0 on aggregate after the first leg, Atletico must score at least twice and win if want to reach the Quarter-Finals.
Inter Milan meanwhile know that a victory or draw would be enough for them to advance to the last eight.
Team News
Antoine Griezmann could return for Atletico Madrid after he sat out their last four matches in all competitions, having suffered an ankle injury in the first leg.
Cesar Azpilicueta (knee) and Jose Gimenez (thigh) could too be available but Thomas Lemar (Achilles) and Vitolo (ACL) remain ruled out.
Inter Milan will be without Marko Arnautovic and Carlos Augusto after the pair suffered muscle injuries in their Serie A win at Bologna.
Juan Cuadrado (Achilles) and Stefano Sensi (ankle) remain absent.
When is Kick-Off?
Atletico Madrid host Inter Milan at Metropolitano Stadium on Wednesday 13 March at 9pm CET (8pm UK Time), live on TNT Sports 1 in the UK.
Stat Attack
- Atletico Madrid lost their only previous meeting against Inter Milan by 1-0 result, which came in the first leg in February.
- Inter Milan are playing away to Atletico Madrid for the first time in all UEFA competitions.
- Atletico are unbeaten in four of their last five Champions League home matches against Italian opposition (W3, D1, L1).
- Antoine Griezmann has scored four goals in Atletico Madrid’s three home matches in this season’s Champions League (W3).
- Two of Inter Milan’s five away goals in the group stage were scored by Lautaro Martinez.
Prediction
With just one win in their last four games and a shock defeat at Cadiz last weekend in La Liga, Atletico realistically must find their clinical goalscoring boots quickly and sort out their defence if want to score first and keep their Quarter-Final hopes alive.
Inter Milan meanwhile rested several first-team regulars at Bologna and although they are winless in their last ten away Champions League trips to Spanish opposition, they do have the first leg advantage and momentum behind them plus fresh legs in attack.
Atletico however do seem to have a measure of Italian opposition at home so I expect another close scrap but if the hosts don’t score first, it will be tie over for Atletico.
Prediction: Atletico Madrid 1-1 Inter Milan
Result: Atletico Madrid 2-1 Inter Milan (Tie level 2-2 on aggregate, Atletico win 3-2 on penalties)
