2023-24 FA Cup: Third Round Replays: Wolves vs Brentford

Wolves entertain Brentford at Molineux in their Third Round replay of 2023-24 FA Cup.

Victory would see either Wolves or Brentford visit West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns in the Fourth Round, live on ITV1 on Sunday 28 January at 11:45am GMT.

Joao Gomes is suspended for Wolves after he was sent off in the reverse tie at Gtech Community Stadium.

Mario Lemina (personal), Daniel Bentley (unspecified), Craig Dawson (knee) and Hugo Bueno (knock) are doubts, subject to late fitness tests.

Jonny (personal), Hwang Hee-chan, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Boubacar Traore (international duty) remain absent.

Brentford could be without midfielder, Christian Norgaard after he suffered a potential ankle injury following Gomes’ foul.

Kristoffer Ajer (foot) could return but Rico Henry (knee), Bryan Mbeumo (ankle), Ben Mee (suspension), Aaron Hickey (hamstring), Kevin Schade (adductor), Saman Ghoddos, Frank Onyeka, Yoane Wissa (all international duty) and Ivan Toney (suspension) remain absent.

When is Kick-Off?

Wolves host Brentford at Molineux on Tuesday 16 January at 7:30pm GMT, untelevised live in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Wolves drew 1-1 in their only previous FA Cup meeting against Brentford, which came in West London earlier this month.
  • Brentford are visiting Wolves at Molineux in the FA Cup for the first time.
  • Wolves have lost just one of their last ten meetings against Brentford in all competitions (W6, D3, L1).
  • Wolves have lost three of their last five FA Cup replays at home – excluding penalty shootouts (W1, D1, L3).
  • Brentford have lost three of their last five away replays in the FA Cup excluding penalty shootouts (W1, D1, L3).

Prediction

With this clash coming just 10 days after their last outing which coincidentally was the initial tie in West London, Wolves will be familiar with their opposition after having defensively weathered Brentford’s extra-man advantage and snatched a scond-half equaliser.

Brentford meanwhile should be slightly irritated that this replay wasn’t scheduled 24 hours later because Toney could be featured, but they have had plenty of time of work out how best to tackle this replay tactically with so many players still absent.

Neither team don’t have the best home or away records respectively when it come to FA Cup replays either, so I do expect this to be another tough battle which could well go to penalties with Wolves possibly having the edge.

Prediction: Wolves 1-1 Brentford *Wolves to win on penalties.

Result: Wolves 3-2 Brentford (AET)
