Liverpool have signed Norway forward, Sophie Roman Haug from AS Roma for an undisclosed transfer fee.
Roman Haug’s move comes after she scored a hat-trick in a 6-0 mauling of the Philippines at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, en-route to Norway’s eventual Round of 16 exit to Japan.
The 24 year-old also scored 12 goals in 39 senior appearances across her 18-month stint at AS Roma during which she was part of their 2022-23 Serie A title winning team, having moved from Norway’s LSK Kvinner FK in January 2022.
Speaking to liverpoolfc.com about her move to Anfield, Roman Haug stated that she is “really excited” to arrive on Merseyside and get the chance to play in English Football.
Explaining her decision to move to Liverpool, Roman Haug commented: “I feel like it was the right next step for me. I got a really good impression of the club and I believe they’re building something big here and I would really like to be a part of it.
“It’s a club with a lot of long traditions and with a lot of ambition. I really hope this season to be able to contribute with a lot of goals and I have a lot of faith that the team will do a great season.
“I’m excited to be able to play in what could be the biggest league in the world too. If we get off to a good start and get momentum, we’re going to be a tough team to beat.”
Roman Haug also iterated that her World Cup performance for Norway will motivate her this season as she added: “It was my first World Cup, it didn’t go quite as we hoped, but for me personally as an experience it was very important and it’s one I’ll take on and use ahead.
“For me to be able to contribute with three goals was a big experience which I’m really proud of.”
Liverpool Women’s manager, Matt Beard added that Liverpool had “been monitoring” Roman Haug’s process for a few years.
Beard went on to tease fans as to what they can expect from the 24 year-old as he continued: “She’s a fantastic goalscorer, her movement in the box is good and she can score all types of goals.
At 24, I think we’re getting Sophie at a really good time and she’s just what we needed – a proven goalscorer who is still hungry to continue to develop and progress her game.”
Roman Haug arrives at Liverpool as a serial domestic winner, having won six league titles in total with LSK Kvinner FK and AS Roma, plus four Norwegian Cup titles with Kvinner and 2022-23 Supercoppa Italiana with Roma.
Roman Haug will wear the number 10 shirt this season and could make her competitive debut for the Reds away to Arsenal on 1 October, whilst her home bow could take place against Aston Villa live on Sky Sports on 8 October.
