Danish midfielder, Mads Bidstrup has left Brentford to join RB Salzburg for an undisclosed transfer fee.

Bidstrup’s departure comes after three seasons at Brentford where he made 14 appearances in total without scoring, of which six appearances came in their promotion-winning 2020-21 season during his first season at the club.

He went on to make eight appearances the following season – including four outings in the Premier League, but has spent the last 18 months on loan at Denmark’s FC Nordsjælland, where he scored no goals but produced one assist in 43 appearances.

RB Salzburg however were impressed by Bidstrup’s performances and swooped for the the 22 year-old who has signed a five-year contract with the Austrian champions until June 2028.

Speaking about the decision to let Bidstrup leave, Brentford’s Director of Football, Phil Giles commented: “Mads is one of the best professionals we have worked with over recent seasons. He is so dedicated and is someone who always scores highly on our athletic testing.”

Giles however admitted that Bidstrup needs regular game time which Brentford can’t offer him at present, as he added: “He did extremely well on loan over the last 18 months, and ideally we would’ve liked to work with him for longer. However, we all recognise that at this stage of his career Mads needs to continue to start games every week.

“Since we are not in a position to offer him that we have agreed this transfer and will continue to be invested in his future success. I know everyone here will be pleased for Mads and wish him the best of luck at his new club.”

Bidstrup meanwhile is excited to begin life at Salzburg as he told www.redbullsalzburg.at about his joy to make the move, as he said: “I know the philosophy of the club and the way that Red Bull Salzburg play football. I am a player who likes to be aggressive, fast and to play attacking football in a young team. It is the perfect step for me to move here.

“My compatriot Maurits Kjaergaard told me everything about life here in Salzburg, of course, and I have only heard good things. That made the decision even easier for me.”
