Germany welcome England to Allianz Arena in their second Group 3 match in League A of 2022-23 UEFA Nations League.
Victory could see Germany go top if Hungary fail to beat Italy elsewhere, whilst England can go second with a win if Hungary and Italy draw in their match.
Team News
Germany have no fresh injury concerns to report with Premier League stars – Ilkay Gundogan and Kai Havertz looking for starts, having been utilised as substitutes in Saturday’s 1-1 draw away to Italy.
England have a full squad available although manager – Gareth Southgate could rest James Justin after the fullback picked up a minor injury on his debut in Saturday’s away loss to Hungary.
Conor Gallagher, Kalvin Phillips, Raheem Sterling and Tammy Abraham meanwhile will amongst those looking to start here, having been utilised as unused substitutes on Saturday.
Stat Attack
- This is Germany’s first Nations League meeting against England but they’re unbeaten in three of their last five meetings across all competitions (W2, D1, L2)
- England have won three of their last four visits to Germany in all competitions (W3, L1).
- Germany have never gone three consecutive matches in all competitions without scoring against England.
- In four home matches under Hansi Flick in all competitions, Germany have scored 19 goals and conceded just once (W4) – which came in a 2-1 win over Romania in October 2021
- England are looking to avoid two consecutive away matches without a goal for the first time since they drew 0-0 in Slovenia and lost 1-0 at Germany in October 2016 and March 2017 respectively.
Prediction
With no defeats since Flick replaced Joachim Low as manager last Autumn, Germany certainly will be a difficult team to beat on home soil, yet were made to dig deep in a frustrating display to draw against an inexperienced Italy with a comeback goal.
England meanwhile need to deliver a huge attacking improvement because their end product simply was lacklustre against Hungary, whilst they lacked creative ideas as a team to mix up their play to try and catch a robust Hungarian team out with a defensive slip proving costly.
Both teams though will definitely ring the changes in starting line-ups which could well prove crucial if England bring in the likes of Phillips and Sterling, although scoring first has to be a priority for the Three Lions otherwise I can see Germany edging this battle.
Prediction: Germany 1-1 England
Result: Germany 1-1 England
