England Football Association has announced that the 2022 Community Shield between Manchester City and Liverpool will be held at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium.

This decision will mark the first time that the Community Shield has been held away from Wembley Stadium, London, since 2012 when Villa Park hosted Manchester City’s 3-2 victory over Chelsea due to Wembley hosting Olympic Football that summer.

The FA explained that due to Wembley Stadium hosting the 2022 UEFA Women’s Euro Final on Sunday 31 July at 5pm BST, it was impracticable to hold the Community Shield at Wembley this year with the latter event consequently taking place at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium instead.

This year’s Community Shield will see Premier League champions, Manchester City again participating in the event for a second consecutive year, as Pep Guardiola’s Citizens meet Liverpool after Jurgen Klopp’s Reds beat Chelsea on penalties to win 2021-22 FA Cup.

The match will kick off at 5pm BST on Saturday 30 July at the King Power Stadium with live coverage on ITV, who will provide full broadcast details closer to the date

Leicester’s Chief Executive, Susan Whelan has described this opportunity to host the Community Shield as “fantastic news for the city”, whilst underlining the club’s “long-term commitment to establish Leicestershire as a home for high profile sporting events.”

Whelan also issued the following statement addressing the FA for entrusting them as one-off hosts, which read: “On behalf of the Football Club, I’d like to thank the FA and all stakeholders who have worked with us on making this possible.

“We look forward to welcoming teams and supporters from Manchester City and Liverpool to the city in July.”

The 2022 Community Shield will act as the season-opener ahead of the 2022-23 Premier League season commencing across weekend of 5-8 August, although EFL clubs will start their season between 29 July – 1 August.
