Darren Ferguson Resigns As Peterborough United Manager

Darren Ferguson has resigned as manager of Peterborough United as the club continues to fight for Championship survival.

Ferguson’s resignation marks the end of his third spell in charge at London Road, with the Posh currently sat second-bottom of the Championship despite reaching the Fifth Round of this season’s FA Cup where they will host Manchester City at home on 1 March 2022.

Peterborough also confirmed in a statement that Ferguson had chosen to resign via a telephone call to Co-owner, Darragh MacAnthony today (20 February).

MacAnthony proceeded to hail Ferguson “as one of the greatest managers” in the history of Peterborough United, whilst describing the success of four promotions and 2013-14 Football League Trophy title as “unrivalled” which defines Ferguson as a “legend” of Peterborough.

The 45 year-old Co-owner proceeded to pay a personal tribute to Ferguson’s work especially in his latest spell as he placed on record his personal thanks for Ferguson’s efforts, particularly in his handling of the first-team throughout the pandemic.

MacAnthony also noted that Ferguson had to work with “financial constraints” due to no supporters allowed inside London Road last season, citing his “admirable and methodical” approach to the situation to secure promotion as League One runners-up.

Reflecting on Ferguson’s impact on the squad, MacAnthony added: “He created a working environment that the players enjoyed despite the restrictions and he deserves enormous credit for that and the success we enjoyed.”

MacAnthony and the club also expressed their gratitude to Ferguson and his family in the concluding paragraph of their statement, which read: “We all wish the Gaffer and his wonderful family nothing but the best for the future.”

The 50 year-old previously managed Peterborough between 2007-2009 and 2011-15 and across all three stints, he has guided the club to promotion from League One on three separate occasions and once from League Two in 2007-08 season.

Peterborough United will also make ‘no further comment’ until further notice as the club prepare for a tricky trip to Sky Bet Championship leaders, Fulham on Wednesday 23 February at 7:45pm GMT.

Ferguson’s final match in charge saw Peterborough lose 1-0 at Derby County despite both teams finishing with ten men, with the Rams moving above the Posh into 22nd but both teams are five points adrift of safety.
