Denmark welcome Belgium to Parken Stadium, Copenhagen, in their second Group B clash at Euro 2020.
Victory for Denmark will lift them off the bottom of Group B whereas a win would see Belgium seal a top three finish at minimum.
Team News
Christian Eriksen is ruled out for Denmark for rest of the tournament after suffering a cardiac arrest during Saturday’s defeat to Finland.
Kasper Hjulmand therefore is set to name Mathias Jensen as Eriksen’s replacement with no further changes to the starting lineup expected.
Belgium will be without Timothy Castagne after the fullback suffered a fractured eye socket in Saturday’s win over Russia.
Kevin De Bruyne (facial) and Axel Witsel (Achilles) however are set to return after recovering from facial injuries which kept him out of the trip to Saint Petersburg.
Jan Vertonghen could be rested after suffering a knock at the weekend to his ankle.
Stat Attack
- Denmark won their only previous clash against Belgium in a major tournament, winning 3-2 in Group A at Euro 1984 in Strasbourg.
- Belgium have won just three of eight ‘away’ meetings against Denmark (W3, D1, L4).
- Both teams have scored in four of their last five meetings in all competitions with Denmark scoring 12 goals to Belgium’s eight.
- Two of Denmark’s last three defeats have come against Belgium albeit in both meetings of 2020-21 UEFA Nations League.
- Romelu Lukaku has scored three goals in his last two appearances for Belgium.
Prediction
Putting the overshadowing emotions of Eriksen’s collapse to one side, Denmark will feel hard done by to have not snatched a point against Finland despite their dominance particularly in the first half yet were just unable to break their opponents down.
Belgium meanwhile just cruised to victory through various errors from Russia but will need to maintain their focus and emotions here because a win would seal qualification, although Denmark will be a difficult team to predict mentally given Saturday’s events.
Either way, this should be another tough contest for the Danish team and if they again can’t break oppositional defence down, I can see Belgium nicking this.
