2019-20 Sky Bet Championship: Week 29 Roundup

Leeds United moved back top of the Sky Bet Championship after a crazy round of games spread out over the past week, due to several teams in FA Cup action at the weekend.

West Bromwich Albion fell to a shock defeat at Cardiff through Lee Tomlin’s free-kick winner, having initially equalised through Charlie Austin after Callum Paterson had put the Bluebirds ahead at the start of the second half.

Leeds therefore moved top after Patrick Bamford’s brace helped the Whites see off Millwall in a five goal thriller.

First half goals from Shaun Hutchinson and Jed Wallace had the Lions in front at half time, but Bamford struck twice either side of a Pablo Hernandez blast to complete a comeback win, which sent Leeds back to the summit and two points clear of the Baggies.

Joe Lolley’s 14th minute strike proved enough for Nottingham Forest to edge past fifth-placed Brentford and climb to third, following Fulham’s goalless draw at Charlton last week.

Bristol City round out the top six after beating Reading through Jamie Paterson’s effort midway through the second half.

Down in the relegation zone, Luton remains bottom on goal difference after overturning Wayne Rooney’s opener to come from behind and win 3-2, courtesy of a late Jayden Bogle own goal.

Tom Barkhuizen’s brace helped Preston batter Barnsley 3-0 to ensure that the Tykes slipped to second-bottom, after Wigan came from behind to dispatch Sheffield Wednesday with a 90th minute winner from Jamal Lowe to move four points from safety.

Elsewhere, Darragh Lenihan’s header helped Blackburn beat QPR to move up to tenth, having seen Adam Armstrong’s opener cancelled out by Jordan Hugill in a tight encounter.

Ashley Fletcher rescued Middlesbrough a late point at home to Birmingham, who had initially led through Lukasz Jutkiewicz.

Steve Mounie’s injury-time header was enough for Huddersfield to beat Hull in a tight encounter at the KCOM Stadium, in which Karlan Grant fired the Terriers ahead before Ryan Tafazolli poked in Hull’s equaliser.

Finally, second half strikes from Sam Clucas and James McClean helped Stoke defeat Swansea and move above Charlton into 20th position.
