With qualification for the Europa League Knockout Stage assured for both teams, Manchester United take on AZ Alkmaar at Old Trafford in a scrap for top spot in Group L.
Anything other than a defeat will see Manchester United secure top spot and a seeded place in the Round of 32, whereas AZ Alkmaar must simply win to go top and secure an easier knockout route.
Team news
Embed from Getty ImagesNemanja Matic could return from a groin injury for Manchester United, as several players near full match fitness after various injuries.
Jesse Lingard is doubtful with a knock but could feature from the bench if he passes a late fitness test, whereas Diogo Dalot (groin) won’t be ready for another week.
Paul Pogba (ankle), Marcos Rojo (), Timothy-Fosu Mensah and Eric Bailly (both knee) are all still absent but could return over the festive period.
AZ Alkmaar have a near full squad available with Myron Boadu their only absentee through suspension.
Stat Attack
- Manchester United drew their first ever meeting with AZ Alkmaar, as both teams failed to find the net in a goalless draw in October.
- AZ Alkmaar are yet to lose in the Europa League this season since entering in the Second Qualifying Round (W5, D6).
- Man Utd have only conceded twice in the group stage this season, doing so last time out in a 2-1 defeat away at Astana.
Prediction
Something has changed at United because in their last three games, they have pressed higher and shown more fight when out of possession which was lacking for a large part of recent months.
AZ Alkmaar therefore have a huge task on their hands to stop this improved form but with United being at home, I can’t see them doing that but a goal would be a positive result.
Prediction: Manchester United 2-1 AZ Alkmaar
Result: Manchester United 4-0 AZ Alkmaar
