2018-19 Premier League: Week 38 – Manchester United vs Cardiff City

Manchester United welcome Cardiff City to Old Trafford as both teams aim to finish their disappointing seasons on a high.

A win for Manchester United could see them leapfrog Arsenal into fifth and avoid a potential early start to next season in the Europa League second qualifying round.

Cardiff meanwhile are down but are guaranteed 18th place so are playing for pride as players fight to keep their places at the club for next season.

Manchester United could have a host of players back from injury for their final game of the season.

Romelu Lukaku (thigh), Alexis Sanchez (ankle), Jesse Lingard and Sergio Romero (both knee) all face late fitness tests alongside Anthony Martial who is battling an unknown injury.

Antonio Valencia is however definitely available after overcoming a calf strain as Ole Gunnar prepares to give some youngsters like Mason Greenwood a run out.

Eric Bailly’s season however is over as he continues to recover from a knee injury.

Cardiff could be without loanees, Victor Camarasa as the Spaniard battles a dead leg whilst Harry Arter is ruled out with a calf strain.

Sol Bamba (Anterior Cruciate Ligament), Callum Paterson, Matthew Connolly (both ankle) and Joe Ralls (thigh) are all long-term absentees for Neil Warnock’s side.

Form

Manchester United arrive here without a win in their last four after suffering two defeats then consecutive draws.

The Red Devils however are unbeaten in 9 of their ten home league games under Gunnar Solskjaer, and have taken 10 points from their last five at Old Trafford.

Cardiff have taken just one win in their last seven and are winless in three of their last four away trips.

Prediction

This tie is basically a dead rubber but with the risk of their season starting in July if Watford win FA Cup next weekend, Man Utd really need to deliver a good performance and hope Arsenal lose at Burnley.

I therefore am going for a home win but with Gunnar Solskjaer set to blood some youngsters, don’t expect a flattering scoreline here.

Prediction: Manchester United 1-0 Cardiff City

Jake predicts: Manchester United 2-0 Cardiff City

Result: Manchester United 0-2 Cardiff City
